Getting to know Nha Trang

Khanh Hoa province's capital sits on the south-central coast and has its own airport at Cam Ranh taking direct flights. That is what makes it such an easy beach stop: fly in from Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City, then carry on overland to Da Lat.

The bay is what separates it from the rest of the country's coastal towns. Hon Mun, Hon Tre and their neighbours lie close enough in for half a day's snorkelling or diving, and on Hon Tre itself the Vinpearl Land cable car and water park give families somewhere to spend an afternoon.

Use it as a base for lazy days with watersports whenever you fancy them, or as the seaside section of a longer run from Hanoi down to Ho Chi Minh City. The road to Da Lat is straightforward, and Mui Ne and Ho Chi Minh City lie further south.

Things to do in Nha Trang

  • The cable car over to Hon Tre island and the Vinpearl Land park at the far end
  • Boat trips and snorkelling in the protected waters around Hon Mun
  • The Cham towers of Po Nagar, above the Cai River on the edge of town
  • Vinpearl Water Park, a good half-day if you are travelling with children
  • Long Son Pagoda, with its hillside seated Buddha statue
  • The Museum of Oceanography, for marine life and preserved specimens
  • An evening walk and dinner along the Tran Phu beachfront promenade

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to visit Nha Trang?
Aim for January to August, when calm seas make island trips and diving reliable. Rain and choppier water arrive between September and December.
How do I get to Nha Trang?
Flights come into Cam Ranh International Airport, a 35 to 45 minute drive from the hotels. It also slots in neatly as a stop between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.
Is Nha Trang suitable for families?
It is. Between the cable car, the water park on Hon Tre and the family resorts there, children are well catered for.
How many nights should we plan for?
Most people stay two or three nights — an island-hopping day, half a day at Vinpearl, then on to Da Lat, Mui Ne or Ho Chi Minh City.
Can Nha Trang combine with a Ha Long Bay or Sa Pa circuit?
Yes. On longer routes beginning in Hanoi it usually turns up as the third or fourth stop.
