Trip overview
The mountains go in first. Before the bay, you drive north to Sa Pa for the cable car and the highland scenery; afterwards the trip flies south for two beach nights at Nha Trang and finishes in Saigon. No other route in this range gathers mountains, a night on the water and a beach stay into one trip.
There is more driving here than on the shorter routes — the mountain legs alone account for around twelve hours behind the wheel — offset by two flights, north to Cam Ranh and Cam Ranh on to Saigon. It is the right choice when variety of landscape counts for more than a tight, city-based schedule, and a long drive with a view does not deter you.

Your day-by-day itinerary
Day 1: Arrive in Hanoi (45 minutes / 25 km)
Arrival is at Noi Bai International Airport, about 45 minutes from the Old Quarter. Colonial architecture, old temples and a handful of lakes are layered into a centre best taken on foot. After check-in the day is free to rest or have a first look around.
Day 2: Road transfer to Sa Pa (6 hrs / 315 km)
The Noi Bai–Lao Cai highway carries you into the mountainous northwest, six hours or so with one break, terraced fields rising alongside as the road climbs. Check in, and the evening is free to walk around the town.
Day 3: Heaven Gate, Silver Waterfall and Fansipan by cable car
Morning takes you up past rose and chayote farms to Heaven Gate and the Tram Ton Pass, at 2,047m the country's highest road pass, with a stop at Silver Waterfall and time to walk and look out over the Hoang Lien Son range. The Fansipan cable car, among the longest and highest anywhere, then covers the ground to the 3,143m summit — the 'Roof of Indochina' — in roughly 25 minutes. The transfer back begins in the late afternoon.
Day 4: Road transfer back to Hanoi (6 hrs / 315 km)
The Lao Cai–Noi Bai highway takes you back down, another six hours with a break, the same mountain scenery unrolling in daylight. Check in on arrival.
Day 5: Full-day Hanoi city tour
A full day covers the landmark sights: the Mausoleum and stilt house, One Pillar Pagoda, and the Temple of Literature, the country's first national university. The Museum of Ethnology follows lunch with context on the country's ethnic diversity, and the day ends in the Old Quarter with a walk around Hoan Kiem Lake.
Day 6: Hanoi to Halong Bay, overnight cruise (3 hrs / 170 km)
Collection is between 8:00 and 8:30am for the drive to the coast through the paddies and villages of the Red River Delta. Aboard a traditional-style junk you pass Dinh Huong, Ga Choi and Sail Island, with a swim stop near Ti Top Island. Dinner is served on deck as the sun goes down, and squid fishing is offered before you head to your cabin.
Day 7: Halong Bay cruise, fly to Cam Ranh (3.5 hrs / 190 km)
Tai Chi at sunrise is optional, then Sung Sot Cave, one of the largest grottoes in the bay, on a walk of about an hour. Brunch is served aboard as the junk returns past Ga Choi and Tortoise islands to Tuan Chau Port; from there a car runs to Noi Bai Airport for the flight south to Cam Ranh.
Day 8: Cam Ranh to Nha Trang (1 hr / 50 km)
From Cam Ranh International Airport it is about an hour along the coast into Nha Trang. Check in, and what remains of the day is free for the beach or simply for recovering from two days of travel.
Day 9: Nha Trang city tour
The day opens at Ponagar Champa Temple, 8th-century Hindu towers standing above the Cai River, and continues to the Nha Trang Aquarium and Vinpearl Land — the resort island reached by cable car, with its amusement park, water park and beaches. An easy day before the flight south.
Day 10: Fly to Ho Chi Minh City
A domestic flight out of Cam Ranh International Airport lands at Tan Son Nhat, where you are met and driven to your hotel — the point at which beach days give way to city sightseeing for the rest of the trip.
Day 11: Cu Chi Tunnels excursion (1.5 hrs / 70 km)
Few wartime sites in the country draw more visitors than the Cu Chi Tunnels, dug and used by resistance fighters across decades of conflict. Your guide leads you through parts of the network and explains the tactics and the daily life inside it — context that a display case on its own cannot give.
Day 12: Mekong Delta excursion (2 hrs / 80 km)
Some two hours southwest lies the delta, the country's rice bowl. A boat along the Vam Xep canal reaches a small islet, where the walk passes orchards and villages, with stops at a bee farm and a family workshop making coconut candy. A horse cart and a rowboat under shaded canals close the day before the drive back.
Day 13: Half-day Ho Chi Minh City tour, departure
Half a day on foot, your vehicle following behind, takes in the former Presidential Palace, Notre Dame Cathedral, the Old Saigon Post Office, Dong Khoi Street, the Continental Hotel and City Hall — the colonial heart of the city. The transfer to Tan Son Nhat International Airport follows.
