Why Ha Long Bay stands out
Quang Ninh province, roughly three hours' drive from Hanoi, is home to Ha Long Bay, recognised by UNESCO for its World Heritage status. Nearly 1,600 limestone karsts and islets rise from the bay's green water, the vast majority with no one living on them, and the caves, grottoes and secluded lagoons tucked among them are numerous enough that a two-day cruise never has to repeat a stop.
In Vietnamese, 'Ha Long' translates as 'descending dragon', from a legend in which a mother dragon and her children flew down from the heavens to defend the Vietnamese from invaders, scattering the jewels from her mouth into the sea to form the islands. Guides typically retell this story on the first evening aboard your cruise.
Most people see Ha Long Bay as an overnight or two-night cruise rather than a stop in its own right, with cabins ranging from simple day-boats to five-star vessels with private balconies. You can also fly directly into Van Don International Airport if you are arriving straight into the region, though most itineraries still route through Hanoi and Noi Bai Airport.

Overnight cruise
Most visitors experience the bay aboard a cabin cruise lasting one or two nights, itineraries that typically build in kayaking and a sunrise tai chi session.
Sung Sot (Surprise) Cave
Its most-visited cave is also the largest in the bay, its chambers spacious enough for several hundred people at a time.
Ti Top Island
A brief climb to a lookout point rewards you with sweeping views across the karsts, close to a small beach.
Luon Cave
Paddle a kayak or bamboo boat through a low tunnel to reach a lagoon concealed on the far side.
Cat Ba Island
For an overnight away from the main cruise routes, this is the bay's biggest island, home to a national park and calmer surroundings.
Pearl farm visits
Some cruise itineraries include a stop at a floating pearl farm.
