Why visit Krabi

On Thailand's Andaman coast, between Phang Nga and Trang, Krabi province stretches across 150 km of coastline dotted with more than a hundred islands, its landscape shaped by limestone cliffs, mangrove forests, waterfalls and caves rather than by resort development. Choose it when you want scenery that looks nothing like the beaches of Phuket or Pattaya.

Visitors typically settle into Ao Nang, Railay, Phi Phi Island or Koh Lanta, where hotels span budget to luxury. Compared with Phuket or Pattaya the nightlife is quiet, and Ao Nang's shopfront restaurants - Thai, European and other Asian cuisine among them - suit families and older travellers just as well as groups chasing adventure.

Activity is really the point here. Half- and full-day excursions cover island-hopping, snorkelling, rock climbing, sea kayaking, jungle trekking and scuba diving, giving you enough options to fill three or four nights without doing the same thing twice.

Things to see and do

Frequently asked questions

How do I get to Krabi?
Fly direct into Krabi Airport - about one hour ten minutes from Bangkok - or drive from Phuket, a trip of roughly two and a half hours.
How many nights should I plan for Krabi?
Standing alone, Krabi is usually a three- or four-night stop; paired with Phuket on a longer trip, two nights is more typical.
Is Krabi good for families, or mainly adventure travellers?
It suits both - Ao Nang offers family-friendly resorts and gentler activities, and Railay together with the island tours delivers the adventure if that's what you're after.
What activities are most popular for a first visit?
Bookings run highest for the 4 Island Tour and a day trip to Phi Phi, with a Railay Beach half-day close behind.
Is Krabi's nightlife similar to Phuket or Pattaya?
Not really - Ao Nang's nightlife stays low-key next to Phuket or Pattaya, which is exactly what suits travellers wanting a calmer beach base.
Can Krabi be combined with other Thailand destinations?
Yes - Phuket is the pairing booked most often, and on longer trips the route can stretch to include Bangkok or Koh Samui too.
