Luang Prabang is the anchor of almost every Laos trip, and rightly so. The routes below start there or end there, and the longer ones add the Plain of Jars, Vang Vieng, the capital and — for the full thirteen days — the caves, plateau and river islands of the south.
Slowness is the whole point of Laos. Once Vietnam and Thailand are behind you, this is where travel finally eases off: watching Luang Prabang's monks collect alms at sunrise, drifting the Mekong, cooling off at Kuang Si, wandering among the Plain of Jars, or continuing south to the 4,000 Islands.
